The 2026/27 Community Pharmacy Contract: What Pharmacy Owners Need to Know

1 min read

In May 2026, Community Pharmacy England agreed the funding settlement for the Community Pharmacy Contractual Framework in England for 2026/27. It is the biggest annual increase the sector has seen for some time, but most owners agree it does not solve the underlying funding gap.

The headline numbers

  • Total funding rises by around 10.3 per cent, an extra £340 million, taking the budget to roughly £3.64 billion.

  • The retained medicines margin increases by £200 million to £1.1 billion.

  • Up to £239 million of margin over-delivery built up to March 2026 will be written off rather than clawed back.

  • The single activity fee rises to £1.52.

Independent prescribing

From autumn 2026, community pharmacist prescribers will be able to prescribe within new Pharmacy First pathways and the Pharmacy Contraception Service. It is a significant step towards pharmacies acting as a first port of call for minor illness.

A programme of reform

CPE accepted the deal on condition that the government and NHS England commit to a joint programme of reform, looking at new funding, contractual and reimbursement models and medicines supply resilience.

What it means for your business

The uplift brings welcome breathing space, but margins remain tight. Owners should review purchasing carefully, since margin is earned through buying well, and plan for the staffing and training that independent prescribing will require. A responsive wholesale partner can help on both fronts. Acorn Pharmaceuticals works with independent pharmacies to keep purchasing competitive and reliable.
